If you have a bad credit rating and need a new bank account. Take a look at this link. Pages 6 & 7 show the relevant information. So even if you are bankrupt there is an account for you.

Hello,
Do you know of any on=line banking facility for those with poor credit history?

Hello,

Most major banks offer a basic bank account specifically designed for people who dont have a credit rating or have a poor credit history. If you have some form of ID, usually a passport and a recent utility bill you can open a basic bank account.

You get a cash card for ATM withdrawals and can have wages or benefits paid into it like any other account. You can set up direct debits and pay bills etc. They do not check/very rarely check your credit rating to open it, so you dont have the advantage of an overdraft or a cheque book and you cannot purchase things over the phone or via chip and pin.

I used to work for Barclays and many people who had them were granted extra facilities after certain periods of managing their account well. For example, after successfully managing your account for 6 months with regualr credits and no problems, you can usually upgrade to an electron/solo or they may decide to grant you a cheque book.

As with most financial products they have underwriters who decide things and if you are ever refused anything in a bank you can challenge it and provide evidence that you are worthy of the product. And as with anything - if you dont ask, you dont get.

I already have a Barclays cash account - but it doesn't provide any on-line banking facility.
Thanks for your advice though - if you know of any other banks that provide that facility, let me know as I very rarley go to a bank nowadays (they still frighten me!) so I like to use the internet to save the hassle of obtaining a blanace by the cash machine.

Cheers
