Parking meters, why so many?

I really don't think that I need to remind anyone, about the current financial crisisThat we are currently enduring in the UK.
So I really have to ask the question, why on earth are our local councils investing heavily in parking meters??
Every now and again, I visit Dorchester, and just recently I have noticed that the amount of parking meters has increased dramatically. Only about a month ago you could park in many areas within Dorchester, for one hour without having to pay. However now all those areas have a parking meter installed to generate even more revenue.
I have also noticed that these areas are patrolled by traffic wardens long after six o'clock at night. You can even now see them lurking around on a Sunday!
I personally hate the fact that because I own motor-vehicle, I have become a target for the councils to extract even more money from me!
